Why Chinese Quotes Expire in Days — and How to Lock Your Price In

Buyers are often surprised that a quotation from a Chinese manufacturer carries a validity of five to ten days — sometimes fewer for steel-based products. It looks like pressure tactics. Usually it is arithmetic: for most industrial goods from Hebei's clusters, raw material is the largest cost component, and its price moves daily on commodity markets.
The cost structure behind the expiry date
Take wire mesh, fasteners, steel pipes or fence panels: the wire rod or steel input dominates the cost. When steel prices move a few percent in a week, a factory that honors a month-old quote either loses margin on every piece or quietly substitutes a cheaper grade — and the second option is worse for you than the first. Currency adds a second layer: your quote is set in RMB and paid in another currency, so exchange movement shifts the effective price too.
How to protect yourself — without fighting the market
- Finalize the specification before asking for the price. Every revision reopens costing. Locking drawings, grades and finish first shortens the quote-to-order window.
- Check the validity period on every quote and plan your decision inside it. If you need longer, ask for validity in writing — some suppliers will hold a price for a confirmed order date.
- Convert acceptance fast, with deposit — the deposit is what actually fixes the price, since it commits the factory to buy the material. A quote you "agree with" but do not deposit on has fixed nothing.
- For split deliveries, negotiate a price-adjustment mechanism up front — e.g. repricing later batches against a named steel index at shipment. Both sides accept movements; neither banks a windfall.
- Compare quotes on the same day and the same spec. Comparing this week's quote against last month's tells you about the steel market, not about the suppliers.
